Professional Basketball Champions 2026-27: Who Wins the 2027 Finals?

The 2026-27 season of the North American professional basketball league began on 20 October 2026. Thirty teams each play 82 regular-season games through 11 April 2027, followed by a play-in tournament from 13 to 16 April and the playoffs from 17 April. The New York Knicks are the defending champions: they beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 finals for their first title since 1973. Eight different teams have won the last eight titles. Last season the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 2025 champions, had the best record, 64-18, and the best net rating, +11.1 points per 100 possessions. The Centre makes the Thunder the most likely single team at 22%. The Spurs follow at 17%, the Knicks at 11% and the Detroit Pistons at 10%. Any other team takes the remaining 40%.

No team has defended the title since the Golden State Warriors won in 2017 and 2018. Each of the last eight seasons has produced a different champion. The Knicks' 2026 title was their third, after 1970 and 1973.

The 2026-27 format

The regular season runs from 20 October 2026 to 11 April 2027. Each team plays 82 games. After it ends:

  • Play-in tournament (13 to 16 April 2027): in each conference, the teams seeded seventh to tenth play for the seventh and eighth playoff places.
  • Playoffs (from 17 April 2027): 16 teams, eight in each conference, play four rounds of best-of-seven series: the first round, the conference semi-finals, the conference finals and the finals. The first team to four wins takes each series.

A champion must therefore win four series, or 16 games, after a full regular season.

The leading contenders

  • Oklahoma City Thunder. Champions in 2025 and the best team in the 2025-26 regular season, at 64-18 with a net rating of +11.1, 2.7 points clear of the next team. They reached the 2026 Western Conference finals and lost to the Spurs in a seventh game at home, 111-103. They are 4-1 so far this season.
  • San Antonio Spurs. Second-best record last season, at 62-20, with a net rating of +8.4. They beat the Thunder to reach the 2026 finals, then lost to the Knicks 4-1; three of their four losses were by four points or fewer. They are 3-2 so far.
  • New York Knicks. The defending champions. Their regular season was strong but not dominant, at 53-29 with a net rating of +6.4, fifth in the league, before their run to the title. They have started the new season 2-4, with a net rating of -1.1.
  • Detroit Pistons. The best record in the Eastern Conference last season, at 60-22, with a net rating of +8.4. They lost their conference semi-final to the Cavaliers 4-3, losing the seventh game at home 125-94. They are 5-1 so far, with a net rating of +8.1.
  • Others. The Celtics (56-26 and +8.3 last season; 4-1 so far), the Cavaliers (2026 Eastern Conference finalists), the Denver Nuggets (54-28), the Houston Rockets (5-1 so far), the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Philadelphia 76ers (5-1 so far), the Memphis Grizzlies (5-0 so far, after 25-57 last season) and the rest of the league.

Reasoning from the evidence

The Centre weighed four kinds of evidence:

  • Last season's strength. Net rating, the points a team scores minus the points it allows per 100 possessions, is a steadier guide to team quality than win-loss record. On that measure the Thunder were clearly first in 2025-26, with the Spurs, Pistons and Celtics in a close group about 3 points behind and the Knicks next.
  • Playoff results. The Knicks won the 2026 title, the Spurs reached the finals, and the Thunder came within one game of the finals after winning the 2025 title. The Pistons have the best recent regular season in the East but lost in the second round.
  • History. Eight different champions in eight seasons, and no repeat winner since 2018, argue against giving any team a very large weight, including the defending champions.
  • The early season. Five or six games are a small sample. The Centre gives them little weight, but notes the Knicks' slow start and the strong starts of the Pistons, Rockets and Grizzlies.

The Thunder have the strongest combined case on last season's strength and recent playoff results. But in a league that has crowned a different champion every year since 2019, no team deserves a weight near one in three. The Centre names four teams and keeps a large share for the rest of the league.

Scenarios: the 2026-27 champion

Resolution rule: the forecast resolves on the team that wins the 2027 finals of the North American professional basketball league (2026-27 season), as officially declared by the league at the end of the deciding game. Later disciplinary or legal decisions are ignored. If the playoffs are moved, shortened or played in a different format, the team the league officially declares 2026-27 champion still counts. If the season is cancelled, if no champion is declared, or if no champion has been declared by 31 October 2027, the forecast is withdrawn. The five outcomes are mutually exclusive and cover every possible champion: each of the four named teams, or any other team. The weights are whole percentages that sum to 100. If a named team is eliminated, its weight is not moved to other outcomes; the forecast is scored on the weights as published here. Any later change is issued as a separate dated revision and does not replace this forecast. The cut-off for any dated revision is 23:59 UTC+4 on Monday 12 April 2027, the day before the play-in tournament begins on 13 April 2027; no revision is accepted after that. Probabilities are the Centre's analytical estimates. Because the five outcomes have no natural order, the forecast is scored with the multi-category Brier score only; the ranked probability score does not apply.

22%

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder had the best record and the best net rating in the league last season, won the title in 2025 and lost the 2026 Western Conference finals only in a seventh game. No other team matches that combination of regular-season strength and recent playoff success. The weight stays below one in four because a champion must win four best-of-seven series, because the Spurs beat them in 2026 and stand in the same conference, and because eight different teams have won the last eight titles.

17%

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs had the second-best record and the joint second-best net rating last season, beat the Thunder in the 2026 Western Conference finals and lost three close games in the finals. Their weight sits below the Thunder's because the Thunder were the stronger team over the regular season, and both teams play in the Western Conference, so at most one of them can reach the finals.

11%

New York Knicks

The Knicks are the defending champions; they swept the Cavaliers 4-0 in the 2026 Eastern Conference finals and beat the Spurs 4-1 in the finals. Their weight is limited because their regular season ranked only fifth on net rating, because they have started 2026-27 at 2-4, and because no champion has defended the title since 2018.

10%

Detroit Pistons

The Pistons had the best record in the Eastern Conference last season and a net rating level with the Spurs. They have made the best start of the four named teams, at 5-1. Their weight is the lowest of the four because they lost in the second round in 2026, and lost the deciding game by 31 points.

40%

Any other team

This outcome covers the other 26 teams, including the Celtics, the Cavaliers, the Nuggets, the Rockets, the Timberwolves and the 76ers. No single team in this group has a case strong enough for its own outcome, but together they make this the largest share.

What to watch

  1. November and December 2026: whether the Knicks recover from their 2-4 start, and whether the strong starts of the Pistons, Rockets and Grizzlies last.
  2. 11 February 2027: the trade deadline, the last point for teams to change their rosters by trade.
  3. Through the regular season: net ratings and the race for the top seeds, which decide home advantage in the playoffs.
  4. 11 April 2027: the last day of the regular season. 12 April: the last day for dated revisions (23:59 UTC+4).
  5. 13 to 16 April 2027: the play-in tournament. From 17 April: the playoffs, then the finals.
