European Club Football 2026-27: Who Will Win the Champions League?

Three of eight league-phase rounds have been played in the 2026-27 Champions League, Europe's top club competition. Paris Saint-Germain, winners of the last two finals, lead the 36-club table on 9 points, with a goal difference of +9. Arsenal, the beaten finalists in 2026, are seventh on 7 points and are rated among the strongest clubs in the world. Bayern Munich are 14th on 5 points but hold the top spot in a public club strength rating. The final will be played in Madrid on 5 June 2027. In the Centre's judgement, Paris Saint-Germain are the single most likely winner at 17%, ahead of Arsenal at 16%, Bayern Munich at 14% and Barcelona at 13%. The largest band, at 40%, is that any other club lifts the trophy.

The format

Since 2024-25 the competition has opened with a single league phase rather than groups. Each of the 36 clubs plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away. The top eight clubs qualify directly for the round of 16. Clubs placed 9th to 24th play a two-leg play-off for the other eight places, and the bottom 12 are eliminated. From the round of 16 to the semi-finals every tie is played over two legs, and the final is a single match at a neutral venue. A club that finishes outside the top eight needs to win five knockout ties, not four, to lift the trophy.

The league phase so far

Paris Saint-Germain have won all three of their matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding 5. Two of those wins came against fellow contenders: 4-2 away to Manchester City on matchday 2 and 4-2 at home to Barcelona on matchday 3. They are the holders, having won the 2025 final 5-0 against Inter and the 2026 final on penalties against Arsenal.

Arsenal are unbeaten, with wins over Napoli and Lille and a 2-2 draw away to Bayern Munich on matchday 3. They were the 2025-26 English champions and reached last season's final, losing only in the shoot-out.

Bayern Munich have one win and two draws, including 3-3 away to Viking and 2-2 at home to Arsenal. Their league-phase position does not yet match their rating: they rank first in the world on the public strength rating used here.

Barcelona scored 11 goals in their first three matches, including a 4-1 win away to Galatasaray, but lost 4-2 in Paris. They are eighth, the last of the direct round-of-16 places.

Real Madrid, record 15-time winners, and Liverpool have also won all three of their matches. Manchester City are 10th after the home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.

Reasoning from the evidence

The Centre weighed four kinds of evidence:

  • Current form. Five clubs are on 9 points after three matches, but each club still has five league-phase matches to play, so the table is an early guide only.
  • Club strength. The public club strength rating, which updates after every match, puts Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Barcelona at the top. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain follow.
  • Published models. Simulation models published after matchday 3 do not agree on a favourite. One rates Arsenal highest; another rates Paris Saint-Germain highest. Both rate several clubs closely.
  • History. Knockout football is hard to predict. Ties can turn on one match, extra time or penalties, and the 2026 final was itself decided on penalties. Since the competition took its current name in 1992, only Real Madrid have won three finals in a row, from 2016 to 2018. Paris Saint-Germain would need to do the same.

No single club deserves a weight close to one in three. The Centre therefore names the four clubs with the strongest combined case and keeps a large share for the rest of the field.

Scenarios: the 2026-27 winner

Resolution rule: the forecast resolves on the club declared winner of the 2026-27 Champions League final, scheduled for Saturday 5 June 2027 in Madrid, including a result decided by extra time or a penalty shoot-out. The result as officially declared at the end of the final counts; later disciplinary or legal decisions are ignored. If the final is moved to another date or venue, the winner of that final still counts. If no final is played and no winner is declared by 31 July 2027, the forecast is withdrawn. The five outcomes are mutually exclusive and cover every possible winner: each of the four named clubs, or any other club. The weights are whole percentages that sum to 100. If a named club is eliminated, its weight is not moved to other outcomes; the forecast is scored on the weights as published here. Any later change is issued as a separate dated revision and does not replace this forecast. The cut-off for any dated revision is 23:59 UTC+4 on Friday 4 June 2027, the day before the final; no revision is accepted after that. Probabilities are the Centre's analytical estimates. Because the five outcomes have no natural order, the forecast is scored with the multi-category Brier score only; the ranked probability score does not apply.

17%

Paris Saint-Germain

The holders lead the table and have already beaten Manchester City and Barcelona, both by 4-2. They have won the last two finals, so their squad knows how to manage a knockout run. The weight stays below one in five because a third title in a row has been done only once since 1992, and the strength rating places them sixth, below five other contenders.

16%

Arsenal

Arsenal sit second on the public strength rating, are unbeaten in the league phase and came within a penalty shoot-out of the 2026 title. One published model rates them as the favourite. They are weighted just below the holders because they sit below them in the table and have never won the competition.

14%

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich hold the top spot on the strength rating, but two draws in three matches leave them 14th. If that does not improve, they would face an extra two-leg play-off round in February. The weight reflects strong underlying quality, discounted for the harder path a lower finish would bring.

13%

Barcelona

Barcelona are third on the strength rating and have scored 11 goals in three matches, but they conceded four in Paris and sit on the edge of the top eight. The weight reflects an attack able to beat anyone, set against defensive results that have been weaker than the other named clubs'.

40%

Any other club

This band covers every other club still in the competition. It includes record 15-time winners Real Madrid and Liverpool, both on 9 points, and Manchester City, fourth on the strength rating. It also covers Aston Villa, Inter and the rest of the field. No single one of these clubs has a case strong enough for its own band, but together they make this the largest band. Two of the recent winners, Real Madrid (2022 and 2024) and Manchester City (2023), sit in this band.

What to watch

  1. 3-4 November 2026 (matchday 4): Atlético Madrid v Bayern Munich, Barcelona v Aston Villa, Villarreal v Paris Saint-Germain, Slavia Prague v Arsenal and Leipzig v Manchester City.
  2. 24-25 November and 8-9 December 2026 (matchdays 5 and 6): including Arsenal v Real Madrid and Aston Villa v Paris Saint-Germain on matchday 6.
  3. 27 January 2027 (matchday 8): the final league-phase table, which decides who goes straight to the round of 16 and who must play off.
  4. February to May 2027: the play-offs, round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.
  5. 5 June 2027: the final in Madrid.
